These stunning landscapes in jars needed no Photoshop

Christoffer Relander captures the beauty of his hometown landscapes in Finland with no external software - only in-camera manipulation.

Finnish photographer Christoffer Relander has created the first instalment in an ongoing series capturing breath-taking landscapes from his childhood in the shell of glass jars.

Christoffer has taken a year to complete Jarred & Displacedusing analog double exposures and manipulating the photographs in-camera only. No external software was used.

For all of Christoffer’s work he takes on this impressive organic process simply because he enjoys the process – taking the creative challenge while out in the field, he says.

Most landscapes in this series are from the Ekenas countryside in the south of Finland where his “roots still lie”.

“Separation anxiety to my childhood is simply what absorbed me into this project,” he says.

“I play with the idea of being an ambitious collector; conserving my environments into a large personal collection.”

All double exposures are shot on medium format film that Christoffer develops and scans himself, as seen in the video.

Pigment prints on paper from Jarred & Displaced are available in limited editions on request.

Christoffer found his passion for photography after serving the Finnish Marines between 2008 and 2009. He’s been commissioned by the likes of Adobe, Nikon and Oxford University Press as well as a number of editorial work.

In collaboration with non-profit organisation AEPGA & Palombar - with camera gear sponsored by Nikon - Christoffer explored the biodiversity of Northeastern Portugal and produced the series Continuum Plateau.

His We Are Nature projects also embody a crystal clear multiple exposure nature, encapsulated within human portraits.
