How those beautiful new Norweigan bank notes were designed

The striking, unconventional redesign of Norway's Krone bank notes by The Metric System and Snøhetta last year quickly went wildly viral.

The design of money is very similar across Europe – especially since the introduction of the Euro – so their modern, graphic reinterpretation resonated with a lot of creatives. The studios were winners of an semi-open pitch process, with Metric taking the front and Snohetta taking the back.

At the opening of the Designs of the Year exhibition this week, I caught up with Martin Gran from Snohetta and Christian Schnitler from Metric – who due to a missing microphone, had to share a lapel mike – to find out more about how they designed the notes – and how surprised they were by the all the attention.
