Kult curates new 'Asian Subconscious' typographic poster collection

The collection features 10 limited edition prints created by Singaporean graphic designers.


A new graphic design poster collection based on the theme 'Asian Subconscious' has been curated by design studio Kult3D.

The poster series, which consists of 10 limited-edition designs by Singaporean graphic designers, has been curated to celebrate the launch of a new collaboration between Hong Kong-based store Kapok and furniture and product design range Industry+.

Each designer, ranging from emerging artists to established talents, used influences from Asian architecture, typography, packaging and food to create their posters.

All of the designs, which were recently unveiled as part of Singapore Design Week, will be available to purchase from Kult's online store.

Right: A new dawn. A new day. poster design by Where You Going. "Made from elements of three existing alphabets (comprising four languages: Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil), these new characters are familiar yet alien, suggestive of future possibilities," explains the design duo.

Right: Naked Lunch by Mojoko, which says: "Based on packaging for Chinese medicine, this piece incorporates the obsession with fod. A visual juxtaposition of east and west culture."


Right: Poster design by Bloodthrone: "Romanticising the trades of those who labored in a time before an era of accelerated urban development, 'life' seemed to be that perfect denominator, a voyage we are all on. It can be seen as a journey that transcends the trades and negotiations. It is one that builds us through adapting and living, and filled with laughs and tears that remind us of how fragile we are as humans."

Right: "Asia houses much historical and artistic architecture due to influences from both East and West, making it an exciting place to explore," explains designer Ryan Len. "The typographic poster embraces the diversity by drawing influences from different elements of architecture found across Asia, forming the word Asia in Mandarin."


Right: Black Sticky Rice by LSD. "Writing in Lao script of "brain" on the right (reading bottom to top) and "stomach" on the left (reading top to bottom), written with black sticky rice, the symbol of food in Lao. The stomach being the second brain, especially in Asia, where food is without thinking, it's just there all the time."


Right: Poster design by Foreign Policy Design, which says: "Even though we are operating in an English-language-driven world, our Asian roots and behaviour still persevere. Magically like molecular actions, we are able to "disintegrate" our Asian-ness, re-format and "integrate" within global society. The magic of being Asian."

Right: When describing his poster design, Jonathan Yuen says: "Here I deduce 'Keep Calm' with a stroke like still, undisturbed water, and 'Carry On' with an unhindered road that goes on into the far horizon. As a result, the pictographs looks like 'one new Chinese word'. 'Just Do It'."


Right: Homesick by Somewhere Else. "The Mandarin characters mean 'homesick'. We want to allude to the current sentiment a lot of us have: we miss the homes we used to have... especially the sense of xenophobia right now and a sense of loss of identity with rapid modernisation."


Right: Blocks 1 by Masafa. "The black stroke represents an 'alif', the first letter of the Arabic alphabet which has deep roots in Singapore's history as the Jawi script was an adaptation of the Arabic alphabet adapted for writing the Malay language."

Right: The final poster in the series is titled A for Asian and is designed by Anonymous, who says: "One of the most common misconceptions formed of Asians is that we all look the same. A is for Asian is a cheeky interpretation that draws parallel between the stereotype that all Asians look the same with another common misconception that all sans serif fonts look the same."
