A giant inflatable Kanye West head to appear at this year’s Bestival

You may remember the iconic inflatable Lionel Richie Head that made an appearance at Bestival in 2013.

It was the creative work of Hungry Castle and Cool Shit. Because of its incredible popularity and praise by industry greats, the giant inflatable head is making a comeback at this year’s Bestival – but this time it’s none other than Kanye West, and it’s bigger than ever.

Hungry Castle brings meme culture into the real world by creating large inflatable sculptures. The collective has been around for the last four years, exhibiting a giant inflatable poo emoji that makes ice cream, a laser cat, big bird, Nicolas Cage in a cage, and bananas dancing like bananas, among other internet-inspired ideas.

Cool Shit is a Barcelona-based fashion house created by the artists from Hungry Castle after the success of producing limited edition full print tees of Lionel Richie’s face as prizes to fund the Kickstarter project. Cool Shit now sells new collections "inspired by the internet", such as a Sad Kanye Tee and Drake’s Shirt. Essentially Cool Shit funds the art created by Hungry Castle.

The Lionel Richie Head was inspired by the singer's Hello music video where a blind girl sculpts his head. Bestival goers lined up to crawl through a cranial nerve tunnel leading inside the head and listen to Lionel’s "inner thoughts and voice".

But this year, Kanye West’s head will stand seven metres tall – that's three and a half metres taller than Lionel's head. It will be dubbed 'Happy Kanye', a positive spin on the 'Sad Kanye' meme that took the internet by storm. Here's a video to explain it.

Happy Kanye will stand on a rainbow plinth in the middle of Cuckoo Clump, encouraging festival goers to step into the rainbow and celebrate "togetherness".

Bestival is held at Lulworth Estate in Dorset from September 7-10, with headline acts including The xx, Rag’n’Bone Man, Danny Brown and Dizzee Rascal. The festival also includes the world’s biggest confetti cannon and the world’s biggest bouncy castle.
