Kerry Hyndman’s dramatic illustrations for a Blue Peter Award-winning book about heroic survivors

The children's book includes 46 illustrations by Kerry of near-death experiences of true survivors, and has just received a Blue Peter Award.

A children's book about courageous survivors which Kerry Hyndman illustrated has received the Blue Peter Award today for Best Book with Facts.

Written by David Long, Survivors: Extraordinary Tales from the Wild and Beyond, was nominated for the Book Trust award in December. Kerry was commissioned to illustrate the 23 real-life stories in which the protagonists - pioneering explorers and survivors - have to fight for their lives against natural elements.

Some of the stories are well known, such as Ernest Shackleton’s South Pole expedition, and a hunter’s close escape from a grizzly bear - which the Oscar-winning film The Revenant was inspired by - or the story which the film 127 Hours was based on.

Others are not so familiar but are just as intriguing, such as 17-year-old Juliane Koepcke’s trek through the Amazon jungle to safety after surviving a plane crash in Peru.

Kerry used Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and hand-drawn textures to create the high-intensity landscapes involved in the protagonist narratives.

She created a spot illustration and a full or double page spread to accompany each story.

The aim of the anthology is to inspire children and help them understand the importance of self-belief and bravery.

Kerry says she enjoyed the challenge of "adding drama and peril to each scene".
