Moleskine's Batman notebooks: Give your notes and sketches some Kapow

The limited edition set lets you draw within pages decorated with images of Batman, including the cover of The Dark Knight Returns.

You could easily imagine one of the artists of Gotham drawing dark thoughts in one of these new Moleskines. The company has released a new line of notebooks featuring a choice of five cover designs featuring Batman – including a limited edition based on Frank Millar’s classic 1986 reimagining of the comic book hero as a 55-year-old man, The Dark Knight Returns.

Each of the four main designs features metallic details, and all feature Batman stickers in the back pocket. All are available with lined or plain paper, and in Pocket (9 x 14cm) or Large sizes (13 x 21cm).

Each Batman-themed Pocket notebook costs €16.90 (£12.40), or $18.95 in the US, or €22.90 (£16.80)/$24 for the Large version.

Moleskine commissioned director Edson Oda to create video to promote the notebooks. You can watch it here.

Moleskine has created 5,000 notebooks with cover and internal art taken from The Dark Knight Returns, which will be available only through Moleskine stores (online and shops).

Batman is one of comics most popular heroes, despite – or perhaps because of – being an archetype of internalised rage and vengeance. Outside of the comics, he’s survived being played completely straight (by Christian Bale) and for laughs (Adam West), as a child (David Mazouzm, in the current TV show Gotham), badly (sorry George), likeably (Michael Keaton) and even as a douchebag (or so I expect, as he’s being played by Ben Affleck in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice).

Apart from the Dark Knight Returns cover, this is my favourite, featuring excellent use of negative space to show the father/son-like relationship between Batman and Robin (as both ward and potential successor)
