These hilarious robot GIFs will be sure to make you smile

The GIFs are part of a personal project by creative studio YLLW that was loved by the internet, of course.

Silly Robots is a series of lovely GIFs starring (as the name suggests) ridiculous robots taking part in all sorts of activities.  Because why not.

What started out as a joke quickly became a popular sensation on social media and turned into a passion for its creators – Chris Lloyd's creative studio YLLW.

The robots' geometric shapes and endless loops – as well as the bright colours – make them a real visual treat and really fun to watch. Each robot has its own personality, so the GIFs are all different from one another. To make sure none would be similar, the studio created a set of important rules to follow: a strict colour palette, one texture and no more than four hours to create one from start to finish.

To achieve such brilliant results under little time, they started by sketching the design on paper and then worked directly within After Effects, where they used diverse shape layers and plugins to speed up the animation process. (Check out our best tips to create amazing animated GIFs.)

Chris was adamant to keep the project fun and to avoid over-thinking the creations. Whatever result was created after four hours was then posted on social media. The 50 GIFs were later combined into a brilliant short film that you can watch at the top of this feature.

YLLW works across platforms from TV to mobile. They have partnerships with creative agencies, production and partners and often work directly with brands. Their aim is to create beautiful and intelligent work while always having fun, which is exactly what they achieved with 'Silly Robots'.
