Portfolio: Jack Hughes

Illustrator, London, UK

Jack Hughes is a London-based illustrator, currently working at ShortList Media as the illustrator for Mr Hyde; a daily email service for men.

Where did you train and what did you specialise in?

Illustration and Animation at Kingston University, specialising in illustration.

What are your favourite tools (craft or digital)?

Photoshop is my God.

What techniques and approaches do you use most?

Collaging and sketching over the collage, then reworking over the sketch with more collage is my usual approach to any illustration.

What kinds of craft materials/tech (eg software applications, creative hardware) do you work with and why?

I manically rough out initial concepts in my sketchbook, then work up the final piece in Photoshop from scratch.

What’s your favourite piece you've created?

That’s a tough one. Probably the work I did for The Gentleman’s Guide to Cocktails, simply because it was such a monumental and career-changing commission.

Which clients have you worked for, and where have you exhibited your work?

Favourites have been ShortList, Harrods, Elle, Burberry, Shop and The New York Times. Some of my work was shown as part of YCN’s collective at 2012’s Pick Me Up, and I was also a contributing artist at Jiggling Atoms.

What/who are you biggest influences?

Anything mid-century whets the appetite.

What has inspired you most recently?

This has to be working at ShortList. I’ve only been here a month or so, but I love the commute and office environment. Plus the amount of free stuff they get is nice (lots of cake and lots of alcohol).

What are you working on now?

Everything under the sun. At least it feels like it. A cover for Shop magazine, something for a Swedish client and the very beginnings of another book!

What’s your dream commission?

To be an in-house illustrator/art director for a huge fashion brand such as Alexander McQueen or Burberry, or even Mr Porter.

Whiskey Sour & Work was used on the cover and as an inside illustration for The Gentleman’s Guide to Cocktails published by Hardie Grant Books
