Chillblast Fusion Render 5000 3D workstation review
Price: £3,049 plus VAT
Pros: Well chosen and very powerful set of components for the price; top-notch graphics card
Cons: Noisier than other models
The first workstation from Chillblast we reviewed almost a year ago wasn’t of the highest quality, but this Fusion Render 5000 is a massive improvement.
Its specs are similar to Workstation Specialist’s WSX6 V2 we looked at last month, with an overclocked Core i7 processor (originally a 3.5GHz 3970x to the WSX’s supposed-to-be 3.2GHz 3930), 32GB RAM, an Nvidia K5000 graphics card with 4GB of its own RAM, a 240GB SSD and a large media drive (3TB versus the WSX’s 2TB). The prices are close too, with the FR 5000 around £150 cheaper.
Considering the specs, it’s no surprise that the FR 5000 was a touch faster than the WSX at 3D rendering in Cinebench, and their After Effects VFX rendering and real-time 3D scores were nearly identical. The FR 5000’s Nvidia K5000 did push the real-time 3D performance higher even than the much more expensive Dell Precision T7600 – which has an AMD FirePro W8000 graphics card – in the intensive FurMark benchmark.
The Corsair chassis is robustly made if a little games machine-like – and overall the FR 5000 was noticeably noisier than either the WSX V2 or the Precision T7600.
